Atomik Xport – Features
Atomik Xport Personal Edition
Atomik Xport Standard Edition
Atomik Xport Personal Edition
Atomik Xport Personal Edition (PE)enables you to automatically extract QuarkXPress content into wellformed XML.
How does it work?
In order to produce useful XML from QuarkXPress, Atomik Xport PE must identify and label content from the QuarkXPress document. It achieves this by scanning the document box, by box, according to the order specified in the Atomik Xport PE preferences. Content is identified and tagged primarily by looking for styling changes in the document and labelling content based on the style sheets applied, the formatting or a combination of both.
Exactly what is extracted can be further controlled through various options in the Atomik Xport PE preferences. For example whether to consider character style changes, only to extract content that uses specific style sheet names, whether or not to include image references in the XML and which additional styling should be embedded.
The exported XML is well-formed, meaning it adheres to the the rules for XML but does not adhere to a predefined DTD. However Atomik Xport PE can also auto-generate a DTD to match the exported XML, in essence making it valid XML i.e. conforming to a DTD.
Why XML?
XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a markup language that enables you to label content in such a way that anyone can use it. XML offers numerous benefits, most notably that it is mediaindependent, flexible and an open standard. Media-independence means being able to easily publish content to multiple media. XML has been long acknowledged as the ideal format to achieve this as it enables the content to be stored independently of its layout. The flexibility of XML means that as long as a publication has some structure to it such as in a magazine, book or newspaper, you are able to store it in XML. Even if a publication has no structure at all, it can still be stored in XML, its just that its usefulness is diminished.
XML is also an open standard. It is not owned or controlled by any single corporation but by an independent standards body, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This means your content should never again be trapped in a proprietary file format.
What can you do with XML?
XML is now supported by thousands of applications including the latest versions of the leading Web browsers and the majority of database applications and content management and asset management systems. This means once your content is in XML it can pretty much travel anywhere.
Who is Atomik Xport Personal Edition for?
Anyone requiring a minimal setup, low cost method of exporting QuarkXPress content into well-formed XML either for reuse in other media or for archiving. It is an ideal entry-level solution for companies that require more sophistication than is available in the low-end XML XTensions but don’t require the sophistication of Atomik Xport Standard or Developer Editions.
Atomik Xport PE is also perfect for companies that have a wide variety of QuarkXPress documents that do not share common design or layouts and for whom strictly valid XML is not required.
Atomik Xport Personal Edition features include:
Automatically extracts QuarkXPress content as XML
Atomik Xport PE enables you to automatically extract the contents of QuarkXPress documents as well-formed XML.
Auto DTD generation
Can automatically create a DTD to fit the well-formed XML extraction making it notionally valid
Exports image data
Any images in the QuarkXPress document can be referenced in the XML including the image name, path, type, scale, size and colour space. Additionally inline image extraction enables image references to maintain their exact geometric position within a text flow.
Box ordering control
Users can specify the order in which Atomik Xport PE extracts the contents from the QuarkXPress document and even group content together.
Support for paragraph and character-level styling
Atomik Xport PE can identify content using styling information at both a paragraph and character level. This enables extremely granular content extraction.
Doesnt require the use of paragraph or character style sheets
Although there are immense benefits to using paragraph and character style sheets in your QuarkXPress documents, you can still use Atomik Xport PE even if you havent used them.
Batch processing
Select a folder and Atomik Xport PE will automatically export XML from all of the QuarkXPress documents in that folder.
Control what is exported and the granularity
User configurable setup specifies what content to export and the level of granularity required. You can even set up a filter to only export content that is styled with QuarkXPress style sheet names that contain specified text strings e.g. headline, body text and author.
Optional inclusion of Formatting in XML
A range of QuarkXPress formatting information can also be optionally included within the extracted XML. This includes font face, font size, style sheet, bold, italics and even entire style sheet definitions.
Support for UTF-8, UTF-16, ISO-8859 and ASCII/Unicode
Decide upon your preferred character encoding method to ensure the XML is in the format you require for its final destination.
Benefits
- Reduced cost of reusing print content for the Web & other media
- Low cost and rapid archiving of QuarkXPress print content

Atomik Xport Standard Edition
Atomik Xport Standard Edition is ideal for repurposing existing QuarkXPress content for web, mobile, PDA or any other XML related publishing, hence enabling companies to maximise the value of their content.
Liberate content
QuarkXPress is used by millions of people all over the world to create a wide variety of publications from daily newspapers through to monthly magazines. With the advent of the Web, wireless devices, ebooks and cross-media publishing in general, extracting content from QuarkXPress so that it can be re-used has become of paramount importance. Equally important is how you can make the process fast, accurate and efficient.
Atomik Xport solves these important issues by enabling you to automatically extract QuarkXPress content as valid XML. There are two key components to the Atomik Xport product, Atomik Xport and Atomik Enhancer. Atomik Xport is XTensions software for QuarkXPress that extracts the contents of QuarkXPress documents as XML. It does this by utilising the existing paragraph and character attribute information contained in the QuarkXPress documents and relating this to the corresponding XML elements defined in a DTD (see below for details).
Enhance content
Once the content has been extracted from QuarkXPress as XML, you can optionally use Atomik Enhancer to further transform and enhance the XML. For example you can add additional information, known as metadata, to the XML documents such as the publishers name and copyright details, even though they were not in the original QuarkXPress document. In this way you are enhancing the value of the content and enabling wider use and faster, more accurate information retrieval.

XML has been long acknowledged as the ideal format to achieve this as it enables the content to be stored independently of its layout. Increasingly, companies are moving to content centric workflows with XML as the chosen content format.
The flexibility of XML means that as long as a publication has some structure to it such as in a magazine, book or newspaper, you are able to store it in XML. This flexibility is achieved by describing the structure and content of your publication using a DTD (Document Type Definition). A DTD is simply a definition of a certain type of XML document. Through the use of a DTD you can create XML documents to perfectly match with your content. XML that adheres to a DTD is known as valid XML. Companies can either create their own DTDs or use one of thousands of industry specific DTDs already freely available on the Web.
XML is also an open standard. It is not owned or controlled by any single corporation but by an independent standards body, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This means your content should never again be trapped in a proprietary file format.
